Summer league serves up success for NexGen and Poppleton juniors

An amazing 37 clubs and 129 teams have taken part in the Yorkshire Summer League with honours still to be decided in many of the league’s divisions. But NexGen Tennis Academy have taken titles at the 8&U and 9&U finals played at Bradford Grammar School.

After coming through qualifying rounds, the 9&U finals were contested between teams from NexGen, Thongsbridge, Beckfoot & Bingley and Ilkley tennis clubs, with final placings decided on a countback after an incredibly close contest.

Huge congratulations go to the NexGen team of Willow, Hannah, Oscar and Charlie who were crowned 9&U champions. Hannah Slide won the ‘Super Server’ award, while Charlie for winning the ‘Amazing Attitude’ award!

Congratulations also go to Edward, Joey, Hannah and Violet who didn’t lose a single match all day in the 8&Us finals, contested by Nex Gen, Abbeydale, Roundhay and Huddersfield.

Poppleton meanwhile have taken a trio of titles, winning the 10&U and 11&U boys, with the club also taking the title in the 14&U girls division.

There’s still lots to play for between now and the end of August when the summer youth league concludes. In the Boys 18&U, Abbeydale were undefeated until just three weeks ago when the boys’ team from John Charles produced a hard-fought upset and take the win 4-2.

“The summer youth leagues have proved incredibly popular and very competitive,” said Jonny Moore, Yorkshire’s tennis competitions lead. “They are designed to provide a positive experience for our juniors across all ages.”
